SAYING NO TO ABORTION

Man, I’m really pissed off. Who do white folks take us for? Mentally retarded people? Or what?

Imagine their cheek; they’ve just organized this meeting where their aim is to cajole me into supporting the legalization of abortion. To sweet-talk me, James Toyitoyi, who is not only an honourable member of parliament for Mapoza but also a practicing church elder! What effrontery!

And if it wasn’t for the fat allowances they’re dishing out, I swear on my mother’s grave that I wouldn’t have shown my respectable self at the damn meeting. But you know the lure of money, particularly when you’ve a large family to feed and several side chicks squirreled away in town to keep. So I hesitantly drag myself to the meeting.

I’m late but that’s on purpose. When you’re the big kahuna, you deliberately arrive at a meeting late. You let them stew a bit, shows them who the boss is. And I take a few more minutes to catch my breath and tuck in my shirt which more often than not comes out due to the spare tyre around my waist. When you’re in a big position, it’s important to be fat. It gives you respect. If you don’t believe this, just try to give a kid a thing and tell him to give it to the boss. Without asking, he will give it to the fattest person in a group.

The white lady who’s the country representative of the international NGO hosting the meeting is obviously unhappy by my late arrival but she dare not admonish me.  She talks about the traffic jams, apparently trying to rationalize why I’m late.

I smile and say I’d forgotten about the meeting until my wife reminded me. Shows her how unimportant I consider her meeting to discuss legalization of the murder of helpless infants. And to stress this further, I demand that I sign for my allowances first. You know these whites do not like the idea of paying allowances for meetings so you’ve to be sure to avoid being tricked.

Her presentation is superb. She explains in detail situations where abortion would be legal. Cases of rape, defilement, incest, gross fetal malformation blah blah blah. I almost laugh. Whites, in their perverted minds, think black people are brainless. Do they really think we blacks do not know the importance of abortion? It’s not a new thing. It has been there since time immemorial.

In villages, there’re a lot of herbalists who specialize in abortions. Of course their skills are now waning because of the propaganda that has consistently been waged by whites that abortions by herbalists are unsafe. It’s the same as the mudslinging that has been done against traditional birth attendants to say it’s unsafe to give birth at a traditional birth attendant’s place. Lies. Lies. Lies. Who helped our women give birth before the arrival of white men?

But I digress. The case we’re talking about is whether abortion should be legalized or not. Whites have completely no clue of how the black mind works. Blacks will never disclose their real position on a matter. They’ll say one thing and do another thing. If they think blacks will go on a podium and support abortion they are grossly mistaken. Even the strongest supporter of abortion in private will say vehemently in public that he or she opposes abortion. This is how our minds work.

Look at religion. People will claim our country is a God fearing nation. When you look at posts on Facebook and WhatsApp they’re mostly about religion. About Jesus. About God. Our churches are always filled to capacity. If you don’t go to church you’re seen as a bad person. But go into the streets, you’ll wonder where the people that post the religious stuff and go to church every Sunday live. The newspaper headlines are always screaming of corruption and plundering of resources in both high and low places. Theft of medicines in hospitals. Patients being mistreated in hospitals. Miscarriage of justice in courts. Land grabbing. Eish, where is the God fearing society we talk about?

The church itself is even worse. If there’s one thing that the church has managed to instill in our society is to create a populace of hypocrites. The pastors, church elders and the congregation have all mastered the art of hypocrisy of the highest order. Offspring of Cain!

But we’re talking of abortion. The church is at the pole position of the fight against the legalization of abortion when at the same time it is also the biggest culprit. It is an open secret that most prophets sleep with their female congregation and in the process some get pregnant. To protect their names, the men of God organizes hush-hush abortions.  This goes for church elders and other people high in society. These Pharisees are the ones that screams most against abortion.

You think I’m making a mountain out a mole? Haven’t you heard of women who’ve the audacity to give a testimony in church that God has given them a child when in fact it is the prophet himself who has made them pregnant while the husband stupidly claps his hands? And when the child who is subsequently born is a spitting image of the pastor, people see nothing wrong with this kind of phenomenon and continue to flood the church for more of such type of ‘miracles’. If people can indulge in this kind of blasphemy right in church, what good can come out of such people? More duplicity.

I shouldn’t just point at the others. Even myself who’s a member of parliament is an accomplice in this hypocrisy. When going to meetings, I usually pick one of my girlfriends along. Most of my friends do the same. If you think I’m exaggerating, check what happens in hotels and lodges when parliament is in session. It’s Christmas time even for prostitutes. Now it happens sometimes that the girlfriend gets pregnant and you know if it gets out, you’re politically finished. So what do you do? Your guess is as good as mine.

You may think that I’m speaking for the legalization of abortion. No, over my dead body. I’m just trying to show why the bill to legalize abortion is doomed from the start. Those against the bill will even have been involved in an abortion or would get involved if the situation warranted it. But the issue is the black mind. It never opens to something it thinks society is against.

Most black people consult witch doctors. But they’ll never disclose this. They’ll even be at the forefront campaigning for the banning of traditional medicine. Yet at night, they sneak to consult herbalists. They’ll drink herbs in the confines of their homes and strongly speak against them in public. They would rather pop blood pressure pills openly in the office and drink blood pressure herbs secretly in their bedrooms.

Does this sound weird? Look at all company medical policies. They do not allow their employees to visit witch doctors. Yet the very same people that draw and approve policies prohibiting consulting herbalists are at the vanguard of visiting the herbalists when sick. And they see nothing wrong with this. They’ll do their best to carry out covert abortions if their daughters get unwanted pregnancies. They’ll pressurize their girlfriends to have an abortion. They’ll conduct an abortion where it is necessary but believe me they’ll never support abortion in public.

Now that does not mean that they do not want the abortion to be legalized. No. it’s not that. What they don’t want is to link their good names with the pro-abortion movement. They’ll be happy when the law passes without them having supported it. It’s a necessity. You ask why? They’re respectable members of the society. Church elders. Pastors. Village elders. Fathers. Mothers. What will people think of them if they hear them supporting abortion? That’s their fear and nothing else.

Don’t give me the bible stuff. Even in the old good book, there were exceptions. God said do not kill but there were exceptions where some people had to be stoned to death depending on the circumstances. And then there’s the matter of interpretation. I know of churches that allow their members to drink beer. Others say it’s a sin. Others allow polygamy while others do not. Others do not allow women to preach in church. Others do. The contradictions are endless.

Then there is the issue of sanctity of human life. But where does human life start? Others say in the womb. Others say not. Others say abortion is murder. If that’s the case, is a miscarriage an unintentional murder? And then, since when have we started caring for other people’s lives? Corruption and stealing of public resources is the same as murder as this leads to death of patients due to lack of medicines in hospitals, poor roads that cause accidents and so on. And these thieves are the ones that moralise on the evils of abortion.

But here I’m digressing again. What the country representative is forgetting is that merits and demerits of abortion are not the issue here. We cannot openly support abortion the same way we cannot openly support herbalists. It’s as simple as that. If there’re thousands of Christians who drink beer and openly rage against it but still drink it in secret, how can they openly support abortion? Most of these are convinced drinking beer is not a sin but since their churches forbid it, they’re happy to suffer in silence.

To us, some things have to be done in the dark. We’ll always say no to polygamy while we’ve surreptitiously stashed away several wives. We’ll continually say no to alcohol while we drink it on the sly. We’ll constantly promote the holiness of marriage while clandestinely keeping a bevy of girlfriends. Hypocrisy and more hypocrisy.

We know the legalization will protect the lives of our women where abortion is the only option. But with such deeply entrenched double standards, how do they expect us to say yes to abortion? Unless we can find an answer to that, the legalization of abortion is bound to flop. Society is very unforgiving towards those who break its rules. We’ll allow this chance slip away and continue to take our daughters to undergo very dangerous illegal abortions in the name of protecting our fake holy names and a religion to which we only pay lip service.

With a smug smile, I let my mind wander to the bootylicious girl waiting in my hotel room while I pretend to be listening to a discussion I know will for the reasons I’ve expounded be skewed in one direction only. But why should I care? Remember I’m in the meeting only for the fat envelope hoarded safely in my briefcase.
